It’s hurricane season again – whomp whomp! Dependable transportation is an important part of an evacuation plan. Here are 2 quick things you can check on your car before an evacuation road trip.
Engine Oil
Checking your engine oil level is a good idea before you get on the road. Low oil levels can cause damage and leave you stranded on the road. Checking your oil level on most vehicles is pretty simple. After safely opening your hood look for the red or yellow dipstick handle. If you need help opening the hood or finding the oil dipstick your owners manual can be a big help. With the engine off and vehicle sitting on a level surface remove the dipstick and wipe it off on a rag. Re-insert the dipstick, making sure it is all the way inserted, and remove the stick again. Now you can inspect the end furthest from the handle and check your oil level. All dip sticks have an operating range and as long as your level is between the minimum and the max you are good! If your oil level is too low Tim’s can help with adding some. If your level is too full, Tim’s can help with determining why.
Wipers
Good wipers and full washer fluid is great to have for unexpected rain and bugs on the highway! While your hood is open check your wiper washer fluid level. Most washer fluid caps are either black or yellow and have a wiper washer symbol on the top. Again if you need help finding your washer fluid your owners manual is a great place to start. Top off with washer fluid or water if washer fluid is not available. Checking your wipers is easy! Starting with a clean windshield then operate your windshield washers. If you notice streaks or unwiped spots on your windshield you need wipers. We find high quality wipers last our clients about a year.
Having your engine lubricated properly and being able to see on the highway is a great start to a safe plan. At Tim’s we feel that it is important to have your vehicle fully inspected by a professional before heading out on the road.
