Can a bad alternator cause dim lights on car?

Have you noticed that the interior and exterior lights of your car are dim? If you have noticed a sudden change and now your lights are weaker than they were it is an indication of a problem. A very likely cause of dim headlights is a problem with your charging system.

Here are a few possible causes:

Bad Cell in Battery

If your battery is internally failed it can not support the electrical requirements of your car. If your lights are dim it could be a sign that your bad battery is not able to give them enough power.

Weak or Failing Alternator

If your alternator is not able to meet the electrical demands of your car voltage supply will go low. As your failing alternator is struggling to keep up your lights will appear dim because they are not being fully powered.

Faulty Wiring

If your charging system or battery wiring is faulty it can cause dim lights. Wiring is the road that electricity uses to travel through your car. If the wiring is not connected or has corroded or weak connections it will hurt the flow of electricity. A sign of bad wiring can be dim or not functioning lights.

If you are noticing dim or dimming lights on your vehicle, do not ignore this sign! Early detection of a problem can keep a small problem from turning into a large problem.
