Does my Tesla need tires?

New Orleans has notoriously rough and pothole ridden streets. Life in the Crescent City is hard for car tires! Tires for Tesla’s and other electric vehicles are no exception.

Here are some reasons why Teslas typically have shorter tire life as well as some tips to help get the most life out of your Tesla tires:

Teslas are heavy.

A dual motor Tesla Model 3 at 4,065 lbs. only weighs about 500 lbs. less than a 4 door full size pickup truck. The weight of a vehicle that weighs as much as a truck on 4 car tires is a recipe for accelerated tire wear.

Regenerative braking.

Your Tesla uses the electric motors that propel the vehicle for most of its braking needs. Especially if you are one pedal driving. Regenerative braking creates electricity from the energy of your slowing vehicle. Regen braking is great for range and battery life, but it does cause accelerated tire wear.

Teslas are FAST!

Tesla builds some of the fastest and most powerful production vehicles sold. The tires on your Tesla need to be appropriately matched to the capability of your vehicle. Performance tires do not last as long as high mileage/ higher tread wear rated tires. Aggressive driving on performance low tread life tires will cause accelerated tire wear.

How long the tires last on your Tesla have a lot to do with the tread life expectancy of the tires required for your Tesla, your driving habits, and proper tire maintenance.

Here are some things that you can do to help extend the life of your Tesla tires:

1) Have your tires regularly rotated.
On the uneven and pothole ridden streets of New Orleans we recommend having your Tesla tires rotated at every 6 month or 5000 mile service. Frequently rotating tires will help them wear evenly. Tire rotations at Tim’s are FREE when taking advantage of our Tire Protection Plan!

2) Have your alignment checked and adjusted if needed.
It is a good practice to have your vehicle aligned yearly. While this may seem excessive, locally in New Orleans our rough roads take a toll on vehicles. All drivers should definitely have their vehicle aligned after installing a set of tires!

3) Regularly check your tire pressure. It is a good practice to at least monthly check your tire pressure.
Tim’s recommends filling your Tesla tires to the recommended pressure on the white and yellow sticker inside of the drivers door jamb. Don’t want to check your tire pressures? We can! Just give us a call and we can reserve a time for you to stop by and have us check your tires.

Teslas need tires more than most vehicles. There are some special considerations that need to be made when choosing and installing Tesla tires. Let the Tesla Mechanics at Tim’s help with selecting, installing and PROTECTING your tire investment!
