Does battery light on mean bad alternator?

What does a battery light mean? While it could mean that you have a dead battery, often times battery lights are an sign of another problem.

Here are a few reasons your battery light could be coming on:

Dead battery/ Dead cell in battery.

If your battery is so bad that your vehicle can not maintain its electrical system the battery light will come on. While a battery problem is a pretty un likely cause of a battery light it is possible.

Alternator failure.

If your alternator is not able to keep your vehicle at its desired state of charge the battery light will come on. It is your alternators job to replenish the electricity your vehicle is using. If because of wear or failure your alternator is not able to keep up, your battery light could come on.

Charging system problems.

Many modern vehicles have computer controlled charging systems. In these cars an external module requests different amounts of output from the alternator at different times. While this is great for fuel economy it can add another level of complexity. If your alternator is not being commanded to work it can not work!
