Few things are more frustrating during a New Orleans summer than turning on your air conditioning and discovering that one side of the vehicle is blowing nice cold air while the other side is blowing warm or even hot air.
This is a common problem we see at Tim’s Quality Car Care, especially during the hottest months of the year when your air conditioning system is working its hardest. The good news is that this symptom often points us in the right direction when diagnosing the problem.
While there can be several causes, two of the most common reasons are a low refrigerant charge and a failing temperature control actuator.
Low Refrigerant Charge
Your vehicle’s air conditioning system relies on refrigerant to absorb heat from the cabin and carry it outside the vehicle.
When the refrigerant level becomes low, the evaporator inside your dashboard may not receive enough refrigerant to cool evenly across its entire surface. In some vehicles, this can cause one side of the evaporator to cool better than the other, resulting in cold air from one set of vents and warmer air from the opposite side.
Many drivers assume that if they still have some cold air, the refrigerant level must be okay. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. A partially low refrigerant charge can create uneven cooling long before the air conditioning stops working altogether.
Since refrigerant does not get used up, a low charge typically means there is a leak somewhere in the system that should be identified and repaired.
Failing Temperature Control Actuator
Another common cause involves a component called a temperature control actuator, sometimes referred to as a blend door actuator.
Many modern vehicles have dual-zone climate control systems that allow the driver and passenger to choose different temperatures. Inside the dashboard are doors that direct air through the heating and cooling system. Small electric motors called actuators move these doors to achieve the desired temperature.
When an actuator begins to fail, it may no longer position the door correctly. As a result, one side of the vehicle may receive properly cooled air while the other side receives warmer air that has been mixed with heat from the heater core.
In some cases, you may also hear clicking or ticking noises from behind the dashboard when changing temperature settings or starting the vehicle. This often happens when the plastic gears inside the actuator begin to wear out or break.
Other Possible Causes
Although low refrigerant and actuator problems are among the most common causes, there are other possibilities that may require professional diagnosis. HVAC control issues, damaged blend doors, electrical faults, or restrictions within the air conditioning system can sometimes create similar symptoms.
That is why proper testing is important before replacing any parts.
