Like many car parts, Tire Pressure Sensors (TPMS) eventually wear out and stop reading. Depending on your vehicle, sensor replacement can be a considerable cost. Vehicles in most states including Louisiana are not required to have functioning Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. Because it is not required many people decide to not replace Tire Pressure Sensors.
Here are some PROS and CONS for replacing your Tire Pressure Sensors:
PROS:
Safety On The Road
Under inflated tires are the number one reason for blowouts. A functioning Tire Pressure Sensor will let you know if your tire is low. If your tire pressure sensor does not read this safety system can not work.
Better Fuel Efficiency
Under inflated tires cause more friction, more friction means worse fuel economy. Working Tire Pressure Sensors will help insure optimal fuel economy.
Longer Tire Life
Under inflated tires cause premature tire wear. If your Tire Pressure Sensor can let you know if your tire is low you could get more use from your tires.
Complying With State Law
A few States require TPMS systems to work. If you live in one of those states it is something that will be checked when the vehicle is inspected.
CONS:
Cost
If one Tire Pressure Sensor needs to be replaced because of old age chances are all of them are in need of replacement or close. A set of Tire Pressure Sensors may not be in your budget.
Not Required In Louisiana
If you are a Louisiana resident you do not need to have functioning Tire Pressure Sensors. It is your choice weather or not you want this safety system to work.
Special Tools and Calibrations Often Needed
Replacing a Tire Pressure Sensor is often more complex than just installing the sensor. Specialized tire equipment is recommended to remove the tire to install the sensor. Most sensors need to be programmed, then initialized in the vehicles Tire Pressure Monitor module. Most individuals, and many auto repair shops do not have the specialized equipment to make new sensors work in your car.
At Tim’s, all of our recommendations start with addressing safety concerns. However, if our client believes that they do not need a functioning TPMS to be safe that is their decision. If you do not have a functioning TPMS it is highly recommended to check your tire pressures at least monthly.
