It is officially Summer in New Orleans, and that means the heat and humidity are here to stay! The high heat, muggy humidity and frequent afternoon storms can cause challenges to both residents and their vehicles.
Here are 5 things to check on your vehicle to be NOLA Summer ready!
1. Cooling System
Your engine has to work harder to stay cool during hot summer days. Check the coolant level and look for any under hood leaks. It is also a good idea to start your vehicle, run the a/c and make sure you can hear the fans working. It is very important to only check cooling systems on vehicles that are not hot. Make sure the car has been sitting for at least two hours before opening any pressurized parts of the cooling system.
2. Air Conditioning System
Your a/c system is working its hardest when it is hot outside. Air conditioning is not only for driver comfort, it is also a key component of your windshield defroster. Make sure your AC system has good airflow out of the ducts and is cooling down the cabin. If your system has not been serviced in the last 2 years It would be a great idea to service your AC to make it summer ready.
3. Battery Health
Hot temperatures can damage and cause accelerated wear on your battery. Heat makes batteries more likely to corrode and over heat, shortening the life of your battery. It is a great practice to have your battery checked at every 5 month service.
4. Tires
It rains A LOT in the summer time in New Orleans. Check your tires and make sure you have more than 4/32 of an inch tread depth. Low tread depth can increase stopping distances in dry weather. Low tread can greatly increase stopping distance and the risk of hydroplaning in wet weather.
5. Wipers
Good condition Wind Shield Wipers can really make a difference during the rainy season. A good way to check if they are still performing well is to spray your windshield with wiper fluid and turn on your wipers. If they streak, they may be ready for replacements.
