What happens to old car batteries?

According to the EPA 99% of car batteries are recycled after removal. That makes them one of the most recycled items in the country! At Tim’s, all batteries are properly disposed of and are sent to a recycling facility.

After your old battery is removed from your vehicle it is then stored on a pallet in our shop. Scrap batteries are referred to as Battery Cores. Every Thursday Our battery cores are loaded into a van and transported to our wholesaler’s storage facility. Once there are enough batteries to make a load, battery cores are then transported to a recycling facility.

Once at the recycling facility, batteries are disassembled. Battery acid is drained and neutralized or chemically changed and re-purposed. The plastic is ground into pellets and cleaned to be made ready for its next use. The lead is melted down and purified to get ready for its next use. Most plastic and lead used in batteries comes from recycled battery cores! The environmental impact of making batteries is significantly reduced because of recycling.
