Summer is coming! An inevitable part of the season is the oppressive heat of our New Orleans summers. We rely on our vehicle’s a/c systems to keep us comfortable while traveling. During our hot summers our air conditioning systems are put to the test.
Here are 3 tips to help extend the lifespan of your vehicle’s A/C system:
Change your serpentine drive belt every 5 years or 60,000 miles.
Most vehicles are dependent on rubber belts using the force of the engine to turn a compressor to make the a/c work. Replacing your belt on a preventative maintenance schedule will help keep your a/c running for the long haul!
Change your in cabin air filter.
Your in cabin air filter helps keep your under dash a/c and heating components from getting restricted. Clean cabin air filters not only help with air flow but they also help from debris causing rot and leaks in your evaporator and heater core.
Include A/C performance checks in your routine maintenance schedule.
Tim’s recommends servicing 134A systems every 24 months and 1234YF systems every 48 months. Automotive a/c systems are more prone to leakage than home a/c systems. Because of the rubber lines and seals used there is a small amount of leakage that occurs. Vehicle a/c systems also rely on the refrigerant to transport oil thought the system. Meaning a 25% low charge on your system means your air conditioning compressor is only being lubricated 75% as well as it was designed.
Preventative maintenance is always the best way to insure years of trouble free operation.
