Most drivers have heard the term CV axle or CV shaft before, but many are not exactly sure what these components do or why they are so important to the safety and drivability of a vehicle.
A CV axle, also called a Constant Velocity Axle, is a critical part of your vehicle’s drivetrain. Its job is to transfer power from the transmission to the drive wheels while still allowing the suspension and steering system to move freely. Unlike a straight axle, a CV shaft must flex and move constantly as your vehicle travels over bumps, turns corners, and reacts to changing road conditions. This flexibility is made possible through CV joints located at each end of the axle.
Modern front wheel drive vehicles, as well as many all wheel drive vehicles, rely heavily on CV axles to operate smoothly. When the system is working properly, power is transferred evenly and quietly to the wheels. However, when CV joints begin to wear or the protective CV boots become damaged, problems can develop quickly.
New Orleans roads can be especially tough on CV axles and suspension components. Potholes, uneven pavement, flooding, and rough streets place extra stress on steering and drivetrain systems. Over time, these impacts can damage CV boots or accelerate wear inside the joints themselves. Once a CV boot tears, grease begins to leak out while water and dirt work their way inside the joint. Without lubrication and protection, the CV joint can wear rapidly.
One of the most common warning signs of a failing CV axle is a clicking or popping noise while turning. Drivers may also notice vibrations during acceleration, grease splattered near the inside of the wheel, or clunking noises from the drivetrain. Ignoring these symptoms can eventually lead to complete CV joint failure, which may leave your vehicle unable to move safely.
