Car struggles to start in cold but runs fine.

Winter mornings are tough on everyone, even your car! Similar to how it is hard to get out of your warm bed and get your day started it takes more to get your car started in the cold. If your car struggles to start in the cold but runs fine you may be experiencing the beginnings of a problem. Here are some reasons your car may struggle to start in the cold but run fine.

A weak battery.

Colder temperatures slow down the chemical reaction inside of your battery, making it less efficient. A sign of a weak battery is a slower than normal or struggling type noise during starting. If your battery is older than three years old it may be getting weak because of age. Having your battery regularly tested at service visits is the best way to prevent cold weather battery failures.

A weak starter.

The oil in your engine and other fluids are thicker in colder weather. It takes more energy to start a cold engine than a warm engine. If you are noticing that your car struggles to start in cold weather it could be a sign that your starter is worn and having trouble starting your cold engine.

Fuel system problems.

If you notice that it takes more time to start your vehicle after it has been sitting you may be having a fuel system problem. Your fuel system needs to supply the correct fuel pressure and volume to your fuel injectors. Your fuel system also needs to be able to allow fuel injectors to flow the right amount at the right time for a normal startup. While it is not typically attributed to cold weather, cold temperatures can definitely effect your fuel system.

Cold weather can be challenging for our vehicles and while we do not see extreme cold temperatures in New Orleans it does effect our cars.
