Do I Need to Change My Oil More in the Summer?

With the New Orleans summer heat in full swing we sometimes get the question: “Do I need to change my engine oil more often during the summer?” The Short Answer: No, You Don’t Need More Frequent Oil Changes in Summer.

Despite the heat and humidity we’re used to in New Orleans, modern engines and high-quality synthetic oils are designed to perform well year-round. You do not need to change your oil more often because it’s hot outside.

Stick to a Consistent Schedule

We recommend sticking with a consistent oil change schedule all year round. At Tim’s Quality Car Care, we advise:
Synthetic oil changes should be done every 5 months or 5,000 miles.
Regular or Synthetic Blend oil changes should be done every 3 months or 3,000 miles.
This keeps your engine protected and running efficiently, no matter the season.

Signs You Might Be Due for an Oil Change

  • Your oil change/ Maintenance light or check engine light comes on
  • Your sticker in the upper left hand corner of your windshield says you are due for service.
  • If you are noticing spots under your vehicle where you park, or if you consistently need to add oil, you may have an oil leak or consumption problem.
