Do I need to replace rotors with brake pads?

Your brakes are one of the most critical safety systems on your vehicle. When it comes to vehicle maintenance, brake health should be on top of your list. A question we get a lot at Tim’s is “Do I need to replace rotors with brake pads?” The short answer is YES.

Here are 4 reasons you should replace brake rotors with brake pads:

Brake rotors are not as thick as they used to be.

One of the biggest detriments to fuel economy is rotating weight, the more something weighs the more energy it takes to turn. Car manufacturers use the lightest possible brakes and wheels on vehicles for this reason. All brake rotors have a discard thickness assigned by the manufacturer. Brake rotors on modern vehicles are often below or at discard thickness after one set of brake pads.

Brake pads and rotors wear together.

A big safety plus of modern braking systems is they are designed to create much more stopping power than older systems. The force and heat of modern ceramic brake pads working on steel brake rotors causes them to wear as a pair. The grooves, overheating and uneven surfaces on worn brake rotors is not a good match for new brake pads.

Prevents vibration and noise issues.

Brake pads help dissipate the heat created during stopping. Worn brake pads are thinner than new brake pads and therefore can not dissipate heat as well. By the time your brake pads are worn out your rotor is also thinner than it should be, the metal is overheated and dark colored, and it may be out of true. If rotors are not replaced with pads it is highly likely that your brakes will vibrate or shake at highway speeds, or squeak when coming to a stop.

Maintains Warranty Coverage.
