What do I do if my Tire Pressure Light comes on?

Low tire lights are a great help when it comes to keeping your tires properly inflated. But now that you know your tire is low what do you do next?

First you should check how much air your tires should have. Every vehicle has a tire placard most commonly found inside the driver’s door jamb. This white and yellow sticker will tell you the size, speed rating and pressure of your tires. Now that we know what the pressure should be we can check our tires.

Check your  tire’s air pressure. One DIY method of checking tire pressure is using a slip stick tire pressure gauge. This tool uses the air in the tire to push out a plunger that will give you a pressure reading. To use your slip stick gauge simply press the open end of the tool onto your tire valve for about one second. The plunger will come out and the number closest to the bottom of the handle will be your tire pressure reading.

A possibly more convenient way would be to use a portable air compressor. Most portable compressors have an easy to read digital readout. If your tire is low your compressor can help by inflating your tire to the recommended pressure.

Proper tire inflation is key to safe vehicle operation, better fuel economy, and extending your tire life.
