At Tim’s, we know how brutal that NOLA heat can get. Especially when your car’s AC decides to take a break just when you need it most.
One interesting question we get a lot during our long, steamy summers, is:
“Why does my car’s AC only blow cold air when I’m driving fast?”
If you’ve found yourself sweating at red lights but chilling comfortably on the highway, you’re not alone. Let’s break down what might be going on under the hood, and when it’s time to come see us.
The Short Answer:
Your AC needs airflow to do its job. When you’re cruising down I-10, the natural movement of air helps the system cool more efficiently. When you’re sitting still or stuck in traffic, airflow drops off. This can happen especially if there’s an issue with your cooling fan or other components.
Possible Reasons Your AC Only Works When Driving Fast:
1) Faulty Cooling Fan
Your car’s radiator and AC system rely on an electric fan to pull in air when the car isn’t moving. If that fan’s not working right, your AC won’t cool well when you’re stopped or idling.
2) Low Refrigerant
If your system is low on refrigerant the pressure may not be strong enough to cool properly at low speeds.
3) Clogged Condenser
Leaves, dirt, and debris can clog your condenser, which sits at the front of your car. This reduces its ability to cool, especially when there’s not much air moving through it. Condensers can also become internally restricted.
4) Bad A/C Compressor
The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it’s wearing out, it may not build up enough pressure when the engine is running slow.
What Can You Do About It?
We always say: trust your gut. If your AC feels “off,” especially when you’re not moving, bring it in. Diagnosing A/C problems early can save you money (and sweat) later. Our expert staff at Tim’s will run a full AC performance check, test your system pressure, and inspect everything from fans to fuses.
Let the AC Mechanics at Tim’s help keep you cool this summer!
